  • Illinois Summer Academies Brochures - Deb Stocker
Each county is receiving a limited number of color ISA brochures to use for individual contacts regarding the program. We will have a limited number of additional brochures available - drop me an e-mail if you wish to receive more. NOTE: These were not designed for bulk mailing to all eligible 4-H members, but for a specific one-on-one type of discussion with someone who is seriously interested in the program. Although the Vet Med Academy is already at capacity, there are still a few spots available in the Aerospace Engineering. The other academies also still have spaces available. E-mail Deb to be put on a waiting list if your first choice is filled.
  • Returned 4-H Award Applications (Specific Counties) - Deb Stocker
We are returning most of the State 4-H Award Applications submitted in January. At this time, we are not returning those applications and scoresheets from the youth who are interviewing as semi-finalists for National 4-H Congress or National 4-H Dairy Conference. Those will be returned later this summer after our State 4-H winners have been determined.

The history project will include exhibits, both at the museum and on the Internet, and related educational materials. Individuals who are selected for interview will be videotaped and the information will become part of the exhibit. • Illinois Farm Bureau Young People's Activities DVD - Debra Stocker
The Illinois Farm Bureau Youth Education Committee is providing each Extension Unit with a copy of their promotional DVD for Young People's Activities. While the "Young Leaders" file may not apply for our use, the "Youth Education Program" segment provides short segments on 4-H and FFA programs that are supported by the IL Farm Bureau and their affiliates. For example, informatin is included on the Youth Education Committee (which includes two 4-H representatives); Conferences (Premier 20 Leadership Conference, ILC, and National 4-H Congress) and Contests and Awards (4-H LCP Award). They hope that you will use the DVD with teen 4-H audiences to help promote the programs they support financially and physically. Note: There are "incorrect" photos used for the National 4-H Congress segment; CSREES did not have photos of National 4-H Congress to provide to Farm Bureau, so they substituted photos of National 4-H Conference. We did not know about the incorrect photos until the DVD's were already made. The Young People's Activities office will work with us in the future to ensure correct photos are included. It is planned to reproduce the DVD every 2-3 years to keep information current.

Click on the link above to access the job application for the Illinois State Fair Jr. Department. Please promote this opportunity to your older 4-H members, volunteers, and parents. We would really like to place 4-H volunteers in some of these positions - especially those of Superintendents. For staff in counties near Springfield, if you would also promote this in your local communities, it would be greatly appreciated. Youth or adults do not need to be 4-H connected to work at the fair, but it does make training simpler. Click here for information on job descriptions and work dates.

  • IL State Fair 4-H Club/Group Presentation Application - Deb Stocker
We are again offering 4-H clubs and groups the opportunity to provide an action presentation at the Illinois State Fair. Although the first year of this opportunity was somewhat disappointing regarding participation from the general public, we realize it takes time to generate audiences at a "new" location and we are making plans to enhance our promotional appeal in this area. We hope to generate some of that appeal by recruiting additional clubs and groups to provide educational programs in the area. Clubs will continue to receive a cash premium for participating in this program. The application is available on the 4-H website and the deadline for submitting applications is May 1.

  • Jr. Leadership Conference "Letters" - Deb Stocker (Counties with youth participants)
Youth delegates at the 2007 4-H Jr. Leadership Conference were asked to write a letter to themselves, indicating something they had learned and would share with others when they returned home from the event. We will be sending the original letters back to the youth in approximately 6 months, along with a follow-up evaluation. We thought about sending copies of those letters to county offices so you could possibly provide assistance to the members in accomplishing their goals; however, we did not mention this as a possibility to the young people and feel uncomfortable sharing their letters at this time. You can still contact the attendees, though, and ask how they would like to share what they have learned and provide assistance in helping them accomplish that goal. This is a wonderful opportunity to help these young leaders start to build upon what they learned at the event and get them involved on the club or county level.

  • Illinois 4-H Legislative Ambassadors: A Guide to Meeting Your Elected Officials - Deb Stocker
A copy of the NEWLY REVISED 4-H Legislative Ambassador Handbook was included in the mailing. The handbook offers tips for 4-H members, volunteers, and staff to be prepared for meeting with county board members or commissioners, state-elected officials, and federal legislators regarding the 4-H program. This booklet is the work of the 2006 Illinois delegates to National 4-H Conference. After meeting with their federal legislators in Washington, D.C., these youth felt that our Illinois 4-H members needed information on how to spread the good word on the 4-H program and how it has affected them and their families. It can be used with 4-H Federation or teen groups, Extension councils, State 4-H Legislative Ambassadors, and others in preparing an action plan to keep our elected officials informed of the work going on in their areas. The handbook also offers ideas and worksheets that members can complete and turn in to local Extension offices to report on contacts made with elected officials on all levels. The handbook is being sent to State 4-H Legislative Ambassadors who have registered for Legislative Connection. Print copies are NOT available through 4-H DMS; however, the entire handbook is available on the 4-H Website.

  • Remarks - Richard Clark

  • January 2007 Happy New Year! Each January marks the beginning of a new year. It provides a time for reflecting on the past and making plans for the future. As I think back, I am reminded of the wonderful leadership given to the 4-H Youth Development program by Pennie Crinion. Her passion and hard work has enabled the 4-H program to grow and explore new opportunities for reaching the youth of Illinois. I hope you will join me in thanking Pennie for all she has done in support of 4-H.

Looking forward, I am excited to join the 4-H program as Interim Assistant Dean & Director of 4-H Youth Development. For the last 30 years, I have been involved with Extension and 4-H Youth Development. I have had the privilege to work with youth, volunteers, and 4-H staff in Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Illinois. Having served as a unit educator, state specialist, and state 4-H leader, it is my hope that I can use my experience to work hand-in-hand with you in providing high quality, exciting programs for Illinois youth and volunteers.

Over the next few months, we will be examining the Illinois 4-H program and taking stock of what is working well and what needs some attention. You will have numerous opportunities to be involved in this endeavor. All healthy organizations are involved in a process of continuous improvement. These organizations are constantly looking for ways to improve, even if they are already doing excellent quality work. Illinois 4-H is a healthy organization providing high quality programs, but there is always room for improvement. My hope is that you will use this new year as an opportunity for reflection on the good work you have done and to identify the areas where you would like to make some changes. In 2007, by working together, we will "Make the Best Better".

Looking forward to working with you, Richard Clark

We are finally returning the Blue Award/State Winner 4-H Award applications from this past year. We apologize for the length of time that we have held on to these - time got away from us this year and we didn't get them returned when we usually do. Please forward them onto the 4-H members with our sincere apologies for tardiness AND congratualations for jobs well done! Note: ONLY counties that had youth involved in 2006 4-H award interviews are receiving applications at this time. Other applications from youth not involved as finalists were sent back earlier this year.

  • 2007 National 4-H Conference Fact Sheet & Application - Deb Stocker
Currently, we have openings for eight teens and one adult for the 2007 National 4-H Conference delegation from Illinois. The fact sheet and application are linked AND are posted on the Illinois 4-H website. Deadline for applications is December 15. We are looking for delegates from throughout the state who will represent the diversity of our Illinois 4-H Youth Development program - youth do not need to be 4-H community club members to apply! Ages of the delegates (15-18 by January 1) and male/female ratio are also considered in putting together the delegation. A $350 participant fee is requested from all youth delegates. A portion of that fee helps to cover their flight costs; the remainder is held as an incentive to complete their one-year special program upon return from the conference. A portion of the participant fee will be returned to those individuals who follow through on that commitment. Counties should not let the amount of the participant fee deter them from recruiting individuals - if a youth wishes to apply, but the participant fee poses a financial challenge to the family, please contact Deb Stocker. We do have access to additional funds that can help offset a portion of that fee.
