School Enrichment

The 4-H School Enrichment program offers public and private school teachers the opportunity to extend and enhance students' learning with fun, hands-on activities. Extension professionals collaborate with teachers to bring programs to students by providing a combination of instructional materials and teacher training, delivering instruction in the classroom (teaching or co-teaching), and/or conducting special educational events in schools or communities.

4-H curricula are developed around a 5-step experiential learning model:

  1. perform a learning activity
  2. share results, reactions and observations with others
  3. process the content by reflecting on the experience
  4. generalize - identify key concepts and connect them to other experiences
  5. apply the key concepts to other learning experiences. Along with subject matter, students learn "life skills" such as problem solving, decision making, communication, and leadership.

Curriculum materials used for school enrichment programs are reviewed to ensure quality and promote sharing. The State 4-H Curriculum Committee oversees the review process. To submit materials for review or for more information on the process, contact Bill Million at the State 4-H Office or send an e-mail: wmillion@uiuc.edu.

The following projects are especially recommended for classroom settings. In addition to these, many other 4-H projects are adaptable to the school setting. Refer to the Illinois Clover for complete information on these and all other Illinois 4-H projects.
