Resources: Teaching Aids

Leaders may also check out self-teaching aids from their local Extension office. These include:

Culture Kits (boxes of items such as coins, maps, flags, and clothing from a certain country, along with ideas for using them with a youth group to learn about that country). Contact your local Extension office for details about this free loan program.

Prairie Places—Prairie Places video to study local architecture and heritage. (Contact your local Extension office to arrange for loan of this video and leader's guide with architecture group activities.)

Walk in My Shoes—Loan kits available through local office or State 4-H office. To avoid disappointment, reserve in advance. The kits contain the "immediate aging" supplies.

Geology Kit—Loan kits are available through the local Extension office or the State 4-H Office. The kit contains supplies needed to study geology including: a set of Illinois rocks and minerals samples, directions for using Mohs Hardness Scale, Guide to Rocks and Minerals of Illinois from Illinois State Geological Survey, and a mineral kit.

Electricity Kit—Loan kits are available through the local Extension office or from a Center Educator. The kit contains basic supplies for simple electricity experiments. Kit includes: magnet kit, horseshoe magnet, bar magnet, miniature socket, mini lamps, 2.3V, mini lamps, 6.3 V, batteries and battery holder, white, red, black and enameled copper wire, paper clips, masking tape, anameter, tester and soldering iron.

Home Furnishings Kit—Each county office has a notebook containing additional resources for the Home Furnishings project including decorating tips, painting tips (stamping, sponging and rag finishes), sewing for the home (pillows, etc.) and a color chart. Each region has a video titled, "Decorating with Flair." Contact your local Extension office to borrow the notebook and/or video.
