Camping: Shaw-waw-nas-see
Shaw-waw-nas-see
is located off Rt. 102 in the northwest corner of Kankakee County
adjacent to the Kankakee River State Park. The camp includes 105
acres of rolling hardwood forest and open meadows. A primary feature
is a limestone canyon that runs through the center of camp. Programs
include four traditional sessions of 4-H Youth Camp, two Extreme
Camp sessions, and a Family Camp weekend.
Northern Illinois 4-H Camp Association owns this undisturbed piece of
Illinois. The Potawatomi, under Chief Shaw-waw-nas-see, lived here until
the 1830s. Homesteaders and farmers by-passed this rugged terrain.
Today the natural beauty of the rocks, cliffs, creek, forests and
grasslands is preserved.
Facilities at Camp Shaw are in keeping with the traditional nature of the
camp. Campers stay in cabins with a counselor. Modern shower and toilet
buildings serve the two cabin areas. The large central dining hall is
rustic with a modern, well-equipped kitchen. The 75-foot swimming pool
provides for instructional and free swims. Other program buildings include
nature, crafts, farm and recreation pavilion.
Church groups, youth organizations, service clubs, schools, professional
groups and hobby clubs have chosen this site as the ideal setting for
every kind of activity.
Camp rentals are available in the spring and late summer and fall.
