ILLINOIS 4-H CITIZENSHIP WASHINGTON FOCUS – July 5-12, 2008
Teens Learn Citizenship Skills
Teens interested in travelling to Washington, D.C., July 5-12, 2008, as part of Citizenship Washington Focus, are encouraged to apply by November 2, 2007. The trip is sponsored by University of Illinois Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program. Only 30 delegates will have the opportunity to learn about government and see U.S. history first hand.
Some sites teens will visit include: Arlington National Cemetery, FDR Memorial, Iwo Jima, Jefferson Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial. There will also be an opportunity to talk to U.S. Congressmen from Illinois to share personal 4-H experiences. Teens stay at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland, during the week.
Chris Francis, a 4-H’er in Will County who was a delegate on the last trip said, “ CWF is a great, hands-on learning experience. From touring all of the major DC attractions, monuments, and museums to participating in a mock session of Congress, it was one of the best trips I have been on. Talking to legislators and meeting other 4-H’ers from across the country only make CWF even better.”
The cost for youth delegates will be approximately $1,015, which includes the week long trip, most meals, transportation to and from Washington, D.C., housing and the conference itself! Adult chaperones are also needed. Cost will be $400 to go towards transportation. Check with your local Extension office for local scholarship availability.
Applications and additional information for youth and adults can be found at http://www.4-h.uiuc.edu/events/annual005.html or contact your local Extension Office.
