Four college-bound Illinois 4-H members chosen to receive Legacy of Leadership Scholarships were recognized at the Illinois State Fair during the Illinois 4-H Family Picnic on Saturday, August 13. The scholarship program is coordinated by the Illinois 4‑H Foundation and the University of Illinois Extension State 4-H Office, The following 4-H Legacy of Leadership Scholars received a $1,000 college scholarship. Brea Anne Carico is a 10-year member of the Leadership Pride 4-H Club in Macon County. Brea’s 4-H project interests include leadership, citizenship, community service and communications. She coordinated two community horse show/food drives, which resulted in more than $1,600 in donations and 2,642 pounds of donated food. In 2003, she was selected as a National 4-H Congress delegate and attended the 2005 National 4-H Conference in April. She is the daughter of Dan and Kristi Carico. Brea plans to attend Richland Community College and eventually earn a Bachelor’s Degree in communications or public relations. Brea’s scholarship donor is a former DeWitt County 4-H member, Richard Bell of Stuttgart, Arkansas. Dallas Woodrum is the son of Les and Jane Woodrum, of Danville, and a 10-year member of the Vermilion Clovers 4-H Club in Vermilion County. His 4-H project interests include computer science, rabbits and journalism. Dallas has conducted numerous computer training workshops and was a member of the National 4-H Youth Technology Leadership Team. He was selected to attend National 4-H Congress and National 4-H Conference. Dallas plans to major in government/political science and computer science, before attending law school. His scholarship is funded by Illinois 4-H Foundation board member Keith Parr, of Elmhurst, Illinois. Meggie Olson is a seven-year member of the Plano Clover Kids 4-H Club in Kendall County. Meggie’s 4-H project interests include natural resources, visual arts and horticulture. She was selected to attend National 4-H Congress in 2004 and was selected for the 2005 National 4-H Congress Design Team. Meggie is the daughter of Rex and Barbara Olson of Plano. Her career goal is to become an art teacher and she plans to attend Northern Illinois University to study art education and/or visual communications. Meggie’s scholarship donor is Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kirk of Norris City, Illinois. Sean Breen is an Agricultural Engineering Sciences student at the University of Illinois. He is the son of Kevin and Janet Breen, of Tuscola, and was a 10-year member of the Country Clovers 4-H Club in Douglas County. Sean’s 4-H project interests include crops (corn and soybeans), poultry and horticulture. Sean placed second in the 2004 State Tractor Driving Contest and was recognized as one of the top five 4-H delegates to the Premier 20 Leadership Conference. Sean competed in the National Poultry Judging and Avian Bowl competitions and received a national award for his demonstration at the National Junior Horticulture Association Conference. Sean’s scholarship is funded by The Meyer Charitable Trust in Champaign, Illinois. "These four young adults selected as Legacy of Leadership Scholars already have an impressive pedigree of providing leadership and service to their communities. We are confident that each will use the skills learned through their 4-H experiences in being effective leaders as college students and as citizens of our state and country," said Rod Stoll, Director of the Illinois 4-H Foundation. "We are grateful to our scholarship donors for providing an opportunity to recognize these exceptional Illinois 4-H members while investing in their college education." The Legacy of Leadership Scholarship program was conceived after the Illinois 4-H Foundation received a donation from the second sale of the Grand Champion Steer at the Governor's Sale of Champions at the 2002 Illinois State Fair and used the gift as seed money for the program. The Illinois 4-H Foundation seeks other individuals, corporations, and organizations as partners in providing additional funds for future scholarship recipients. The Legacy of Leadership Scholarship is merit-based, and available to 4-H members who are high school seniors, or in their last year of 4-H membership. The Illinois 4-H Foundation raises private funds that are invested in Illinois 4-H programs, which provide meaningful positive development experiences for Illinois youth to develop life skills. 4-H is the largest out-of-school educational program for youth in the United States. 4-H seeks to assist youth in acquiring knowledge, forming attitudes, and developing life skills that will enable them to become caring, competent, and contributing members of society. In Illinois nearly 286,000 youth participate in 4-H and the other youth programs of University of Illinois Extension. More than 26,000 youth and adult volunteers assist in the programming.
