Illinois 4-H Horse Bowl Team Champions, Hippology Team Reserve Champions at Quarter Horse Congress;
Horse Bowl, Hippology, Horse Judging and Speech Contestants Earn Honors at Quarter Horse Congress and 4-H Nationals

The Illinois 4-H Horse Project state winners in Horse Bowl, Hippology, Judging, and Speech continue to prove their knowledge of equine subject matter by earning high honors in two National Contests. The Illinois 4-H’ers competed at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, OH on October 11-12 and at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup on November 3 as part of the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky.

The rivalry between North Carolina and Illinois continued from last year at the 2001 All American Quarter Horse Congress contest in Horse Bowl. Turning the tables on last year’s champion, the Illinois 4-H Horse Bowl Team, from Mercer County, beat North Carolina and finished first. Ruby Brinegar, the captain of the team, came away with the high point individual title.

At the All American Quarter Horse Congress, the 2001 Illinois Hippology Team had members in the Top Ten in every phase of the contest. Alison Huff, from Waterman, rounded out the Top Ten in the judging phase where they were required to place two classes of halter and two performance classes. In the written/slide phase, Katie McGill, from Oakbrook, tied for fifth and sixth with Alison Huff close behind in seventh place. Continuing Illinois’ strong performance in the written/slide phase, Durand 4-H’er, Elizabeth Flores was tied for ninth place. Kathryn White, of Hawthorn Woods, came away with the Top Individual title in the stations phase, while Katie McGill earned seventh place. Three of the four team members finished in the Top Ten Overall. Alison Huff was in a tie for fourth, with Kathryn White coming in ninth and Katie McGill rounding out the top ten. The Illinois Hippology team, as a whole, came out on top in both the written/slides phase and the stations phase. Additionally, they received fourth place in the team problem phase. The 2001 Illinois Hippology Team, coached by Sandy Pentecost of Metamora, finished second behind North Carolina in overall standings at the All American Quarter Horse Congress.

In the Congress Public Speaking Contest, Tricia Banwart of Salem, WI earned a second place medal with her speech that discussed Hippotherapy. Kim Harris, from Wauconda, placed fifth in the Illustrated Talk division with her topic Equine Parasitism. Heidi Kasuboski from Burlington, WI and Sean Mandrell of Clinton also represented Illinois in the public speech contest with their talks titled Man O War and Every time, Every Ride respectively.

The Illinois 4H Horse Judging Team had some challenging classes to place at the Quarter Horse Congress. Jessica Hamell from Taylorville found herself just two points out of the top ten individual standing in halter judging. A team member or the entire team was only a few points out of the top ten in several other categories.

At the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in Louisville, Kentucky several states vied for the top standings with ferocity as only one point separated each of the top four teams. The 2001 Illinois 4-H Horse Bowl team came away with sixth place and Ruby Brinegar, the team captain, was the fourth place individual.

The Illinois 4-H Hippology team took home more individual and team ribbons at Eastern Nationals. Alison Huff again earned a ribbon in the written/slide phase as she finished fifth. Furthermore, Kathryn White finished ninth with Katie McGill following closely on her heels in tenth place. In the stations phase, Katie took home the third place ribbon and Alison walked away with eighth. Katie finished the contest in tenth place overall with Alison one point behind in eleventh. With three people in the ribbons in the written/slide phase, the team finished third. Losing the tiebreaker to North Carolina for second in stations, Illinois came away with third place ribbons. Additionally, the team placed ninth in the team problem phase after losing another tie. Overall Illinois Hippology finished third at Eastern Nationals.

The Illinois 4-H Horse Judging Team had a better showing amongst fierce competition at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in Louisville, Kentucky. Rachel Baum from Clinton tied for second and third place in the halter division, but lost the tiebreaker and received the third place ribbon. Jessica Hamell, received seventh place in the performance division. In the reasons division Rachel was sixth while Jessica finished tenth. Looking at overall standings, Rachel received a plaque for sixth place. Jessica was tied for ninth through eleventh place, but lost the tiebreaker and thus was out of the ribbons. The team, coached by Debra Hagstrom the Youth Extension Specialist for horse, finished fifth in the halter division, ninth in the performance division, fifth in the reasons division and sixth overall, only a few points away from placing significantly higher.

The activities of the 4-H Horse Bowl, Hippology, Judging and Speaking Teams and contestants are supported by the Illinois 4-H Foundation and the Horseman’s Council of Illinois.
