Illini Summer Academies
June 26-28, 2008
University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana
Additional Speakers and Activities for All Participants
All youth who attend the Illini Summer Academies (ISA) will be involved in several All-Academy programs: Community Service, Opening and Closing Ceremonies and evening events. Read on for more details!
Community Service Project
This year, we are asking each of our delegates to provide a donation for the Champaign County Humane Society. We’ll provide a wish list of items that they need in your orientation packet. From dog leashes to paper towels, we hope to be able to provide them with plenty of supplies for the summer and early fall. Cash donations will be accepted as well. Items will be collected at Registration on Thursday morning.
Opening Ceremony
At our official opening to the Illini Summer Academies, we’ll hear from nationally-known youth development speaker, Craig Hillier of Minnesota. Craig’s keynote program will “stretch your mind, body and imagination,” so be ready for anything as he encourages us to stretch ourselves beyond what we think we can do! It’s a great way to start off a great week of learning, accomplishments, and fun!
Thursday Evening
After your first Academy session, join us at the Illini Grove recreation area for a delicious picnic dinner, games and mixers. Meet teens from across the state AND across all of the different academies. When it starts getting dark, we’ll head back for the dorm for movie night and socializing. Or you may wish to take an evening bus tour of campus, capturing an idea of just how large the University of Illinois campus is!
Friday Evening
You’ve had a full day of Academy classes. Now you’ll want to get dressed up and fancy for our formal Celebration Banquet at the Hilton Garden Inn Conference Center. We’ll take buses from the dorm to the conference center for our banquet, to celebrate the accomplishments of some of our attendees. Entertainment and a dance are also in the plans. Don’t like to dance? We’ll have a game room ready for you!
Closing Ceremony
Scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., this session will offer several highlights from the week. We’ll provide a slide show of all the Academies and ISA events and offer each Academy a 10-minute presentation time to show off what they learned the past three days. Our capnote speaker, Harriet Turk, is an enthusiastic dynamo! She will focus on achieving our dreams by believing in ourselves and taking responsibility for the choices that we make. From Memphis, Tennessee, Harriet will have you laughing and realizing that you can Reach for YOUR Horizon…and get there!
