Illinois 4-H Honors Cargill with Partnership Award
Cargill received the 2003 Illinois 4-H Partnership award for their long-term
support of the Illinois 4-H program. Cargill was recognized during the
4-H Brunch of Champions recognition at the College of Agricultural, Consumer
and Environmental Sciences Library, part of the Salute to Agriculture
festivities on the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana campus on Saturday,
September 27.
Cargill has supported many programs for Illinois 4-H youth, including
work force preparation, biotechnology, crops and farm safety. The company
has also provided local staff time and resources for educational programs
and local fairs.
“We are
honored to receive this Partnership Award from 4-H,” said Doug Childers,

“Cargill appreciates the good work 4-H is doing to help prepare
our youth by building leadership skills and promoting life-long learning.
Their work is vital to our future.”
In 1997, 1998 and 1999, a $10,000 Cargill grant coordinated through
the National 4-H Council was used to create and implement the 4-H Cargill
Career Camps. University of Illinois Extension units in Cook, Will and
Kankakee counties coordinated the camps to teach youth skills needed for
today’s work force. Campers visited Cargill locations in Chicago,
Bloomington, Burns Harbor, St. Anne and Lockport as part of the program
where Cargill staff presented sessions on career exploration.
For
the past three years more than 300 youth have participated in the Illinois
4-H Biotechnology Camp, which was initially funded by Cargill through
the National 4-H Council. Cargill also provides a staff member to talk
to campers about the role of biotechnology in their industry.
