2003 Illinois Friend of 4-H Award

John L. Huston, retired executive vice president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, was named 2003 Friend of Illinois 4-H.
Huston was honored during the 4-H Brunch of Champions recognition at the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences Library, part of the Salute to Agriculture festivities on the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana campus on Saturday, September 27. This award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to University of Illinois Extension 4-H Youth Development.

Huston joined the Happy Hustlers 4-H Club in Warren County in 1954. His projects included sheep, beef cattle and swine. He also participated in public speaking, demonstration and livestock judging contests.

Huston attributes 4-H and his volunteer club leader’s enthusiasm for good livestock and competition for his career with the National Livestock and Meat Board and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

“Many leadership and public speaking opportunities that 4-H offers were very valuable for me, such as being a delegate to the Canadian 4-H Club Congress, a delegate to National 4-H Conference and a summer assistant at the National 4-H Center,” said Huston.

Huston received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education with an animal science option from the University of Illinois. He was inducted into the International Stockmen’s Hall of Fame and named Agri-Marketer of the Year in 1995 by the Chicago Chapter of the National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA).

Huston currently serves as chairman of the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Foundation, director of Extension Partners, delegate to the national Council for Agricultural Research, Extension and Teaching, and director of the International Meat Secretariat. In 1996, he served as chair of the Chancellor’s Commission for University of Illinois Extension and currently serves as director, College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences Alumni Association. Huston has also served as a director of the National Farm-City Council, the Livestock Conservation Institute and chairman of the Illinois 4-H Foundation.
