4-H Day at the
University of Illinois
November 16, 2002

Hundreds of 4-H members and alumni from throughout Illinois converged in Champaign-Urbana to celebrate 4-H Day on November 16, 2002.

Illinois award-winning 4-H clubs, 4-H alumni, partners, and a leader who has dedicated 50 years of service to Illinois 4-H were recognized on 4-H Day, November 16, on the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana campus.





This year, 44 clubs from across the state were selected for outstanding achievements in seven topic areas including agriculture, community involvement & global awareness, home & family, environment & natural resources, mechanics & technology, personal development, and food, nutrition & health. These clubs were recognized for their exceptional projects involving community service and leadership.

Five 4-H Alumni Award winners were also selected this year, based on success in their careers and community involvement. Award winners include Carl Becker, owner of Fair Meadow Farm, Altamont, IL; Robert H. Forney, President and CEO of America's Second Harvest, Chicago, IL; G. Robert Hillman, National and White House Correspondent for The Dallas Morning News, Washington D.C.; Sherrill E. Milnes, world-renowned tenor and Metropolitan Opera Star, Vernon Hills, IL; and Dr. Mary Jo Oldham, President of Southeastern Illinois College, Harrisburg, IL.

Naomi Baker, of Clark County, was recognized as having 50 years of leadership with the Illinois 4-H Program. Naomi's love and dedication for 4-H has allowed her to contribute her time and efforts to "Making the Best Better".

The 2002 Friend of 4-H award was presented to George Daigh of Champaign County, for his numerous contributions to the program and for sponsoring scholarships for 4-H youth.

The Illinois Electric Council (IEC) and the Illinois International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) Association were named 4-H Partners. Both organizations have long partnered with the 4-H Program.

Approximately 700 4-H members, leaders, parents, and volunteers from across the state helped celebrate 4-H Day at the University of Illinois.
